Turkey Day and Mountain bikes!

Panoramic coastal views, hill top Irish coffee, the “Smokers Knoll”,  all things to look forward to at the Pine Mountain Turkey Day Ride. I have been hearing stories of this mystical gathering in Fairfax for most of my adult life, distant obligations have previously kept me from the event. Wendy, Taco, and I headed for the hills this past Thanksgiving with a festive crew of mountain bikers, for what ended up being a holiday highlight. We got to the Java Hut parking lot at around 7:45am and the lot was filling quickly with eager knobby tires. Even the crusty fat tire grandpas could eke out a smile to the hordes of out-of-towners taking over Fairfax for the day. The Java Hut even kicked down coffee and bagels to riders. After milling around we hit the road at around 8:30. Things started with a mellow road burn to help get your legs ready for hills to come. The weather was perfect, sunny at the start with low clouds to ride in and out of as the day went on. The previous days rain made the ground perfectly tacky for the steep climbs and fast descents. It was a great way to introduce little Taco to the world of mountain biking!  I think Taco had some sympathy pains, she wasn’t diggin’ the climbs nearly as much as the swift, windy downhills. I found myself taming speeds for the fear of crushing the 4 pound dog in my sling bag. All in all we had a great day playing in the clouds. Check the Flikr set for more photos!! John Blackwell

As I mentioned earlier its absolutely amazing to be outside right now.  For anyone who is interested in being on their bicycle in an organized event there is a lot happening this weekend.  Quickly:

  • Friday: San Francisco Bike Coalition Gas Free Friday
Stop by an “energizer” station on your way to work and do a couple of lines of progressive urban planning magic dust have a free cup of fair trade coffee and other morning snacks.  Meet at the steps of City Hall, 7:30AM-9:00AM.
  • Saturday:

    Mission Path Race

This is a big deal.  Go ride this race.  It will blow your fucking mind.
(2 hour) mixed terrain race through the Mission, Soma, Downtown and possibly Dogpatch/Potrero neighborhoods.  Race starts 12 NOON Satruday October 25th @ Dolores Park and ends at Rickshaw Bagworks.  Sponsors include Box Dog, Rickshaw Bags, Chuey Brand, Fabric Horse, Sheila Moon, Freight Baggage, Manifesto Bikes, Chrome, White Industries, Mission Bikes. Evil brainchild of Dirty Dave.  Amazing.

  • Saturday: Santa Cruz Psycho Cross Pre Halloween Party
  • Sunday: Santa Cruz Surf City CX
Santa Cruz Cyclcocross party this weekend.  There is a Saturday costume/pre-Halloween race/party and then there is some real NCNCA Cup riding on Sunday.  Good times if you can find a way down the coast.

There’s a ton of Halloween related bike events coming up next week that I’ll post later on.

John Blackwell just got a new puppy that will be our new shop dog.  She is super small, about six weeks old.  We know that she is a mut, but we don’t know what mix she is.  She is so new that we don’t even have a name for her.

We thought that we would make it fun and see if one of our customers/readers could come up with a name that might work.  So, leave a suggestion in the comment section and we’ll pick one out that we like.   We’ll post the results soon, and if you are in the neighborhood, come in and say hi to our new dog.
