Up and Up

On my day off, I headed south on the coast in search of some mixed-terrain riding. I knew of some fire roads between Pacifica and Montara, so I decided to start there.  The trail head was in the parking lot at Grey Whale Cove, where some single track traversed the coastline south before meeting up with the North Peak Access Road, leading all the way to the top.

The beginning of the fire road was broken pavement. Trees lined the road making the climb shaded and pleasant.

As I began to break above the tree line, I looked over my right shoulder and caught a nice view of the coast. To the right is Montara Beach, and in the distance to the left is Half Moon Bay.

As the once-paved fire road gave way to dirt, the grade of the ascent increased dramatically. This climb was at the limit of my ability. Although the road was hard pack, climbing out of the saddle was not an option because my rear wheel would lose traction, so I stayed seated and tried to make my pedal strokes as smooth as possible.

As I increased in altitude, I approached the cloud ceiling. In the distance, the summit is completely socked-in with fog.

Finally, the road leveled-out, and the summit came into view…barely.

There was no view from the summit, only 30mph winds and thick fog. I put on a coat, my gloves and helmet, and prepared for the descent.

On the last pitch of the descent, I overlooked a set of ruts in the road. At about 30-35 MPH, my front tire took a serious side load and the bead separated from the sidewall. It did not explode immediately, so I avoided a crash.

Overall, this was a fun ride. The treacherously steep climb was eased by the breath-taking views, and the anticipation of a long and fast descent.

These are some pics from Gabe E’s 400k ride with the San Francisco Rando Club.  Check out our flickr if you wanna see more.  These photos perfectly illustrate why riding in Northern California is so perfect.

What I did in February

Rando, Ebisu, SFR

Along with our planning meetings and check-ins at the shop, I rode my bike.  For those of you who do not know, I like riding my bike.  I like riding my bike long distances.   For February I rode about 400 non commute/city miles.  Pretty good I think.  On our first day off I rode up over Mt. Tam and Bolinas-Fairfax road to Bolinas to meet Andy and Gabe P. for lunch.  It was a beautiful day and I hung out on the beach while they surfed for a bit, then I rode back up over Tam to the city.

Planet of the Apes

The next ride was with some shop/riding buddies heading south from the city.   We headed south on the great highway, then climbed up over Mount Montara on the “Planet of the Apes” fire road which goes from Pacifica to Montara.  From Montara we headed south to Tunitas Creek Road, then up and over Skyline to Canada Road and back to the city.  Mount Montara, Mixed Terrain

It was a beautiful ride, the weather was great, not super sunny or windy.  Highway One past Halfmoon Bay is fun and Tunitas Creek is beautiful.  You basically ride up a redwood rainforest canyon to skyline.  It’s long, and gets steep at times, but climbing through the silent forest with your buddies more than makes up for it.

Paceline mile 80

The last major ride I did in February was the San Francisco Randonneurs “Russian River” 300k.  I have been trying to complete this ride for the past two years.  In 2007 it poured rain with 25 mph gusting headwinds for most of the day.  I DNF’d in Marshall on the return leg, a victim of being cold, wet, and mentally killing myself.  It was a poor decision on my part, seeing as I was only 50 miles from SF.  Last year I got hit by a car a few days before the ride.   This year threatened rain in the evening, but low winds and cloudy skies prior, perfect.  We left the SF side of the Golden Gate at 6am.  It was a great ride.

Nicasio Resivor 8am

I rode it Audaux style with buddies Bryan (Pelican Owner/Rider), Jim G., and John P.   Along the way we picked up a rider named Raj who had come down from Reno to do the 300k.  Together we rode north through East/West Marin, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa to Healdsburg.

River Road

From there we jumped on the amazing River Road from Healdsburg, through Guernville, to Highway One.  From there we sailed back down south to Marshall where we were treated to a beautiful sunset along Tomales Bay.  From there it was a nice night ride back to the city.

Highway One

Total time with our leisurely stops at the controls was sub-16 hours.  It felt really good to finally get this ride under my belt.  In April I will take on a 400k and another 200k.  In May I am going for the 600k.  I’ll let you all know how it goes.   Sunset

All Photos were taken by Jim G.  Thanks buddy!  I need to get my own camera.

Thanksgiving is a time for family and food, but sometimes you can only take so much of each.  My family time usually begins later in the day, and without work and with so many people out of town there’s nothing better to do than fill the time with an awesome ride.

The Annual Thanksgiving Appetite Seminar Fairfax ride will commence tomorrow at 8am.  The ride is “longest running annual mountain bike event” in the US, and therefore probably the world.  It loops through Fairfax and Mt. Tam on a course that adds up to roughtly 30 miles of dirt riding.  As the oldest ride around it draws a huge lively crowd.  If you can make it up to Fairfax tomorrow you will set yourself up for some rad times.  The above photos were from this site, which has more info on the ride.

In other related news the Marin Bicycle Coalition just published a new edition of its map.  The map covers all of Marin county and is a great reference for anyone looking to explore the area.  At Box Dog Bikes we retail them for $12.  Checkout a pdf of the map from the MCBC website here.
