Getting Schooled!

Saturday I woke up early and went down to Hellyer park for a training session at the velodrome. It was $5 for the training session and $5 to rent a bike (unfortunately we didn’t have a rack on the car so I had to ride some busted old Bianchi that was too big for me). The pace was slow and it was a little sketchy riding in such close proximity with complete strangers, but the instruction was great and despite a few close calls, there were no crashes.  All in all, it was a good time and a decent introduction to riding on the track. The training sessions are every saturday at 8:30 a.m.

When I got back to the city, I stopped by 16th and Capp st. to check out the Bicycle Film Festival street party/BMX jam. First Rule had a bunch of ramps set up, and ran an impromtu long-jump contest.  The day was beautiful, everyone was really stoked and positive, and luckily no one broke themselves off to hard.

Track Bikes, sunshine, passed out drunk people.  This weekend was Gay Pride weekend here in San Francisco and from the looks of it, some people partied a little too hard.

The Bike Kitchen is a really wonderful place in San Francisco.  I think that its really a rarity to find an institution and a group of people so dedicated to bicycles, volunteering and community as is the San Francisco Bike Kitchen.

Holy crap the next bit of life is going to rule!

Saturday AM:
DFL final race this Saturday.  John fixed up his new Retrotec and I’m on my old Schwinn touring bike with mud tires.  If you’ve never been to a cyclocross race this is the one to go to.

Saturday PM:
Party like its 1999 or something

Sunday High Noon:
Box Dog Bikes Ralleycat starts at Ft. Mason Green.  We are expecting a lot of participants and a ton more spectators.  This will be a festive event so even if you aren’t racing please come and enjoy the spectacle and consider riding one or two of the stages for a good time.  If you are racing remember that its a long ride so pack some food and water, wear a helmet, be safe and have fun.

Sunday 5PM:
Race concluces at Thieves Tavern (the bar next to the bike shop) for pizza party and awards ceremony.

Sunday 5:02PM
Box Dog Party at Thieves Tavern.  Celebrate the accomplishments of all the riders, the end of the summer season, a belated harvest moon drumcircle (j/k), or whatever.  If you come it will be amazing I promise.

Monday:
Work

Tuesday:
Interbike!  I’ll be taking a lot of photos and doing a big dump on our flickr page of new product photos.  Macaframa is premiering its video, theres a sick cross race, an alleycat and probably a bunch of industry grey-hairs generally getting loose.  Good times indeed.

I’m pretty stoked about this weekend and the next week, and to top it all off I just heard about the Oregon Manifest!  WTF!  October 10th-12th, Portland OR, like the NAHMBS but at a better location during a huge cyclocross race with so many exhibitors.  I’m excited to talk to so many fabricators, learn about framebuilding details I hadn’t thought about or even through possible and possibly shop around for a custom bike myself :)

Reload Baggage Hip Pouches

Reload Hip Pouch

A good on the body bag.  Hip pouches are large enough to carry your wallet, phone, camera, a couple of pens and a small paperback or notebook, but not large enough to lug around your laptop (thats a good thing).

Reload Hip Pouch

These bags are constructed of Cordura and are lined with a heavy weight colored nylon.  The combination of fabrics makes them waterproof, but I would not suggest submerging the pouches as the velcro closing mechanism does not make a very good seal.

Reload Hip Pouch

These bags are designed to carry the small things you need on your daily outings, and come stock with a small fabric loop between the belt and the pouch to hold your U-Lock.

Reload Baggage Hip Pouches

On days that I do not ride with my messenger bag, backpack or basket, I alternate between filling mine with townie contents (wallet, phone, camera, notebook, keys, asthma-inhaler), party goods (…) and bike ride necessities (tube, co2, tire levers, hex wrench set, etc).

Reload Baggage Hip Pouch

We are currently retailing these bags for $40 each.

Bike to Work Day/Forever I Love Atlanta

This morning I woke up around 4AM and made my way to SFO to catch the early flight to Atlanta. Touching down this afternoon I found Atlanta to be in the middle of whats seems to be an endless rain – quite the opposite of the unbearably hot weather we are enjoying in SF. I am here on some family business, but hope to steal away at least an hour to go get hyphy at No Brakes. Hopefully the hyphy–>crunk transliteration gods will be in my favor and those dudes will understand what im talkin bout! Atlanta is weirdly lush. I’m confused without the constant fog, but I guess this thing called “spring” is happening. I’ll report back once I learn more about this foreign experience…

———————————————————————————————————————–

There are lots of ways to get to work in the morning, some more tried and true than others, but today is officially Bike To Work Day.

To be honest I think the day is a bit hokey, but not everything is about me and there is nonetheless a lot of people on bikes today and a good party tonight. Everyone at Box Dog Bikes (besides me) is volunteering at the SFBC afterparty, and I think that there will be a lot of industry people, enthusiasts, commuters, city planning nerds and all other types of bicycle people there too. If you don’t already know, here is what is happening for the rest of the day:

  • Rush Hour will be happening from 2:30-8PM, but if you are on a bicycle you wont get hopelessly stuck in traffic
  • People are chilling in Dolores; its hot out.
  • The SFBC post commute party is at the Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell St. from 6pm-10pm
    • Its Free
    • The SFBC is giving away lots of stuff
    • There will be a lot of bicycle nerds

    San-Francisco-Bicycle, Commuter, Breezer, Surly, Track-Bike, Transportation, Urban-Planning-San-Francisco, San-Francisco-Bicycle-Coalition-Box-Dog-Bikes

I think its totally worth going to the party. The SFBC people are all super nice and really enthusiastic, and undoubtedly you will get to meet someone from a difference bike niche than you are from and they will ask you how to ride a track bike.
